Every year since 2005 the German Society for the Exploration of Ancient Palestine (DPV) has been able to award grants for scientific research on Ancient Palestine.

Each call for proposals was published in the “Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palästina-Vereins (ZDPV)” and on the Web pages of the Society. All proposals underwent an evaluation by the board of the Society. The relevant criteria for the research projects were named in each call for proposals:

  • Research projects on Ancient Palestine of high scientific quality
  • Preferably research projects by members of the Society
  • Preferably research projects by early-stage researchers
  • Publication of the research results in the journal (ZDPV) or monograph series (ADPV) of the Society

Altogether, including the 2012 call for proposals, twenty research projects were supported by the Society. The grants averaged between 1.000 and 4.000 Euro. In some cases the DPV grants constituted the sole funding of a project.Often the DPV grants supported a sub-project that was undertaken under the auspices of a larger project funded by other institutions.

It is an impressive achievement of the DPV and of its members to have supported research projects in this quantity, variety and quality. Subject to its financial situation, the German Society for the Exploration of Ancient Palestine will continue to award financial grants for research projects in order to fulfill its major aim: scientific research into the history and culture of Palestine.
